In Memoriam: Janis Gleizds

Picture
The Latvian photographer Jānis Gleizds (Janis Gleizds) dies at the age of 86 on 17 April 2010.
Working in the span of creative expression provided by b/w film, Gleizds became renowned for his nude photographs of the woman - particularly noteworthy for an artist with a severe physical disability trying to express himself under the limitations and restraints behind the Iron Curtain - created by the photographic method of isohelia and also using a monocle. His work, which cannot be mistaken for any other artist's work, captures the beauty of lines of the female body in an idealistic and subtle manner, with the scenes of posing in the nature stressing purity and harmony. The intimacy of these pieces of art, created painstakingly and in good taste, is both like the private witnessing of the appearance of an unearthly fairy and broadly descriptive of the woman's essence at the same time. His is the language of deep respect and admiration for the woman.
